hi! disclaimer i have no clue what im doing!!
i am simply a small child whos parents had a strange aversion to getting me an actual laptop. lol.
mostly just a resource dump/helpful links for installing things with linux?? for other ppl who have no clue what theyre doing
please do note that this is only about whatever the hell the chromebook linux stuff is
when installing files, usually whatever is labelled as debian or ubuntu usally works? in my experience at least
there will be a lot of words you don't know! that is ok!! just copy paste from websites and you'll usually be okay
lets goooo troubleshooting advice
- have you ran " sudo apt update " or " sudo apt upgrade " in a while? it just upgrades your system so if you're tryna download smth and it complains about missing packages, it can usually be solved with this.
- have you turned the graphics down to the lowest setting?
- have you looked on stock exchange/reddit?
things that literally only cater to me
- how to run renpy games: download whatever the linux file is, untar it, cd to the directory where the .sh file is, and do ./insertfilenamehere.sh
- how to run rpgmaker games (ive only used a wolfrpg game for this actually :sob): wine lol remember to turn all the settings to stable or lower if it doesnt work
commands!!!
- cd is very useful. if smth isnt working always remember to cd to the right directory, use cd by saying cd and then the folder name that the file you wanna run is in
- typing cd just by itself will send you back to the home directory!
- sudo apt install (insert app name here) sounds obvious but is very good
- if you ever come across a zipped file that you wanna open, use tar -xf insertfilenamehere.tar.gz usually this goes for other compressed archives too!
- tar xjf for .tbz or .tar.bz2
other stuff
- wine is a lifesaver. holy shit. wine is a program that lets you run .exe files on linux/mac, here!
- krita works rly well on linux if you're looking for an art program, and as a bonus, wacom screenless tablets work on linux too!
- the first thing i tried to do on linux, at age 11, was to install ddlc using this!
- some things that just straight up dont work on chromebook linux include: pcsx2 (playstation emulator)(if you wanna play persona 3 just play p3p with a cutscene guide)
- btw dont play ddlc at age 11 i think i traumatized myself
uhh final words for now! have fun disobeying your parents n_n
